Vizions Q&A with Shaheen Samavati

by VIZIONS
April 19th 2017

Shaheen Samavati of Tech.eu joins us as a host for Vizions, and here in our Q&A she talks to us about her journey to tech journalism in Europe, and the power of asking for help.

Tell us about your company. What do we need to know about Tech.eu?
Tech.eu is a leading online source for tech industry news and information across Europe. We keep our fingers on the pulse of what’s happening in European tech and aim to provide the most comprehensive intelligence on European venture capital and M&As. We track and publish fresh deals daily, summarize the data we collect in our weekly newsletters and podcasts, and provide context through our news pieces and our in-depth quarterly reports.

What’s your background? How does it influence your current role?
I covered tech at a regional newspaper in the U.S. for four years before coming to Madrid in 2010 to study an MBA. That decision was, in part, inspired by the business people and entrepreneurs I wrote about, as well as the desire to live abroad. Post MBA, I’ve been involved in several startups as both a consultant and manager, most notably the online home rental platform Spotahome, where I headed marketing at the very early stage. I also continued to write periodically on financial topics for publications including The Wall Street Journal and Latin Finance. I joined Tech.eu in August 2016, which has allowed me to combine my expertise in journalism, technology and entrepreneurship. I lead our data projects and also write and edit news and analysis pieces. While Tech.eu is based in Brussels, I continue to work from Madrid.

What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?
I love new challenges, figuring out solutions to problems and creating new things! I also love that in my job I have the chance to interact with extremely accomplished and interesting people, whom I am always learning from.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
I’m not sure if it’s the “best” advice of my entire life, but here’s a solid tip that comes to mind: Ask for help. It’s amazing what people will do for you if you just ask.

What’s your role at Vizions by Zalando? And what are you looking forward to about the conference?
I will be moderating two panels that look at the future of big data in fashion and online payments. I’ll also be participating in a fireside chat with Vivienne Ming, CEO at SOCOS.

I think the conference will be an awesome opportunity to meet and learn from global thought leaders who are working to change the world for the better.
